Google talk using GAIM
I wonder why most of things google makes are first made available for the windows platform. Considering that they run Linux servers themselves, this move of theirs is a turn-off for me.
Anyway, in the traditional google standard, the google talk IM has been released for windows. But there is hope for linux users. Especially if you use Gaim.
A simple 3-step procedure enables you to chat with your fellow gmail buddies using Gaim.
Run gaim and click on Accounts
1. Click on Add and select Jabber as your protocol.
2. Your screen name is the part before @ in your gmail id. The server is gmail.com
3. Lastly click on more options and use talk.google.com as your connect server.
That’s it! You must leave the other values to default.
Cool! I never knew it was possible! Open Source rules.

I believe the reason behind Google Talk being first made for Windows is the majority of desktop users are… Windows users. IMHO, it would make more sense to cater to the larger population.
In my case, 100% of my friends are on the Windows platform while I ocassionally dualboot to my (Gentoo) Linux. So if Google Talk is only available to Linux users, and I “emerge” it on my Gentoo, then who can I talk to?
Oh, by the way, I rely on Gaim when I’m in Linux
